THE BRIEF

Michael Doyle from Boston, USA contacted us having seen a U1100 DOKA on our stock list. We provided an honest assessment and detailed photos of its condition to aid with the decision making process as Michael was unable to visit us to inspect the Unimog himself. Michael had seen some Mogs in the USA and had some ideas about the overall look he wanted to achieve. One of the most important things was that we needed to increase the cruising speed and improve the responsiveness of the Unimog for highway driving. We answered all the questions which Michael had (there are usually a great many questions where Unimogs are concerned!) and made recommendations as to the most cost effective or longest lasting method to get to the result he wanted. At an early stage we produced a spreadsheet with clear costings for all the work which on which we had quoted. After several amendments & additions we agreed on a clear scope of work.

THE RESULT

One of the first outings for the Unimog on American soil was with other Unimogs at the Massachusetts Mog Meet.

Michael & his family are thrilled with the Unimog.

Michael described the Unimog as “AWESOME” and commented that “You guys built a fine machine!!  Everyone was impressed with the workmanship you guys did”
Find Out How We Did It

THE FINISHED UNIMOG

THE STRIPDOWN COMMENCES IN OUR WORKSHOP

Having agreed the scope of work one of our first tasks was to remove the cab so that it could be restored off the vehicle.

The removal of other components from the chassis could now begin.

THE CHASSIS LAID BARE AND READY FOR SANDBLASTING

Once all components were removed from the chassis we had it sandblasted and powder-coated.

At the same time the axles and suspension could be worked on by our team.

RESTORING THE CAB ON OUR ROTISSERIE

All rust was cut out of the cab after it had been sandblasted.

New repair sections were welded in.

Where the repair sections were not available we manufactured our own to the same or higher standard as the original.

NEW FLOOR SECTION MADE FROM SCRATCH

Our purpose built “Rotisserie” meant that the cab could be rotated through 270 degrees to facilitate the welding repairs needed.

The floor section had to be made from scratch as this section is no longer available from Mercedes.

AXLES, ENGINE & TRANSMISSION RE-FITTED TO THE CHASSIS

Whilst the cab was being repaired the freshly powder-coated chassis was being built up.

All the components used were either new, reconditioned or upgraded replacements.

The axles were fitted with “fast” 23:9 ratio crownwheel & pinions.

REPLACEMENT ENGINE WITH TURBO CONVERSION

To provide the Unimog with the performance demanded by the owner we fitted a low kms OM352 engine with our bespoke turbo conversion.

The engine produces a reliable 200HP – approximately double the output of the Unimog from the factory.

THE CAB RE-FITTED

The moment when cab & chassis are married up again is always an exciting moment in any project as the Unimog starts to look like a Unimog again.

THE FINISHED ARTICLE

We added a 3 way tipping body, cab & x-frame list & 425/75R20 Mitas agricultural tyres amongst many other upgrades.

The build was completed on budget and we kept Michael up to date with photos as work progressed.

REAR MOUNTED WINCH & TOW HITCH

We fitted a heavy duty 15000lb winch at the front and at the rear in a custom mounting inside the chassis rails.

We manufactured an easily removable tow hitch with a USA style receiver hitch.

CUSTOM ALUMINIUM DIESEL TANK

A larger capacity fuel tank in aluminium was fitted to improve the range of the Unimog.

CAB INTERIOR AS GOOD AS NEW

Reupholstered seats, all new rubber seals, dash cover, floor mats & glass.

CAREFULLY LOADING THE MOG INTO A CONTAINER FOR ITS JOURNEY

Our final task was to load the Unimog into a container and make it safe for shipping to Boston.

We took care of all the customs & export paperwork as well as advising Michael on the import documentation.

HAVING FUN IN THE WOODS AT THE MASSACHUSETTS MOG MEET

One of the first outings for the Unimog on American soil was with other Unimogs at the Massachusetts Mog Meet.

Michael & his family are thrilled with the Unimog.

Michael described the Unimog as “AWESOME” and commented that “You guys built a fine machine!!  Everyone was impressed with the workmanship you guys did”

When I bought my U1000 “Rustbucket” , Simon gave me a fair & frank appraisal of its condition. The mog was cleaned and shipped professionally with no issues upon landing here in Australia. Since then, AV has provided me with excellent spares support and the occasional bit of advice. Posting was always prompt and economical via Royal Mail – this has taken a lot of the pain out of restoration. Highly recommended.
