They're Winners in Our Eyes - Unimog Rally Team
Here's an update on how Team Portside did in the 2012 Intercontinental Rally, an annual off-road adventure tour for motor enthusiasts. The trans-African route runs from Almeria in Spain to Dakar in Senegal, passing through some spectacular landscapes on the way. Our team described the 6500km journey as a lot of fun during the day but driving at night over rough terrain - dried out river beds and sand dunes - was one of the most severe off-road experiences ever!
At one point they almost came to blows with the Moroccan military after accidentally getting too close to the closed Algerian border! The mog proved itself as a capable rescue vehicle, by winching out one of the event organisers struggling vehicles as it sunk in deep sand!
Unfortunately, Team Portside had to withdraw early from the race when the clutch pedal broke and they could go no further. Even so, they enjoyed the favourable price of Moroccan diesel (64p a litre!) and raised £1600 for the Grace Jersey Trust, so a big well done to them. The AV racing stripes are ready to go for next year’s race sponsorship!
